Show Your Appreciation

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that the number one reason that people leave their job is that they “don’t feel appreciated.”

It is human nature to desire recognition for a job well done.

It is interesting to me how much I learn about being a positive leader from raising my two sons; and no lesson rings louder than the lesson that positive reinforcement is infinitely more effective than negative reinforcement in achieving long term results.

I won’t lie and say that I don’t have my moments of “negative reinforcement” with my boys, or at work for that matter.

After finding the fifth bus cart in a row loaded up over the rim with plates just waiting to cascade over the edge of the bus pan I have been known to release a threat or two about what will happen when I find the culprit. But you know what strikes me as I write this, I have never caught the person(s) responsible.

An interesting question is how could my outcome be different using praise and appreciation for the right action rather than threats and knee-jerk rules?

Sounds like I have some real life research to do on this one.
